UPI Transaction Limit Per Day: Everything You Need to Know

UPI has become the go-to payment method for most Indians. From paying for the daily cup of tea to paying for the monthly rent, most transactions are carried out via UPI. In fact, the chances are high that you’ve already made a few UPI payments by the time you are reading this. Some of you might even be here to confirm if you have already hit your UPI transaction limit.

Now, this raises a few questions. Firstly, is there a transaction limit? If yes, what is the transaction limit per day? And what happens if you exceed the limit? Let’s find out.

Is There a UPI Transaction Limit Per Day?

Yes, there is a daily limit on how many UPI transactions you can make. To be precise, you can carry out 20 P2P (person-to-person) and P2M (person-to-merchant) transactions in a day across all UPI apps. Or transfer up to ₹1 lakh in 24 hours, whichever comes first. But if you’re a new user, you can transfer no more than ₹5,000 in the first 24 hours. After that, your limit increases to the usual ₹1 lakh. This amount can also vary from bank to bank.

With EMIs, credit card payments, and investments being made through UPI, many users may hit this limit within 1-2 transactions. Here’s some relief for them:

1. P2P and P2M Transfers:

(Peer-to-peer and person-to-merchant payments)

Limit: ₹1 lakh per day or up to 20 transactions

2. Financial Payments

(Mutual funds, brokerage, credit card bills, EMI, loan repayments, etc.)

  • Limit: ₹2 lakh per day

High-Value Payments

(Taxes, IPOs, educational institutions, hospital payments)

  • Limit: ₹5 lakh per day

What Happens When You’ve Hit Your UPI Transaction Limit

If you exceed the transaction limit, i.e., you have either made UPI payment(s) worth ₹1 lakh or 20 transfers within 24 hours, you won’t be able to make any more transactions. Your payment will simply be denied, even if you try to make one.

Is There a UPI Transaction Limit Per Month?

Not yet. Currently, there is only a UPI transaction limit per day. So, your transactions are controlled by daily limits instead of a monthly cap. However, it is possible that your bank may have a UPI transaction limit per month, so be sure to check that.

What’s the Need for a UPI Transaction Limit?

  1. Preventing fraudulent transactions

By limiting the number and amount of transactions, the NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) aims to minimise the risk of fraud. Even if someone gains unauthorised access to a UPI account, the exposure would be limited.

  1. Keeping the UPI platform stable

UPI users are multiplying at an exponential rate. This daily transaction limit ensures that the UPI platform is not overloaded, so as to prevent any downtime or processing delays.

  1. Encouraging responsible spending

The transaction limit, in a way, helps users not to overspend. It encourages you to manage your finances responsibly and be mindful of the money you are spending in a day.

Final Thoughts

Knowing your UPI transaction limit per day ensures you don’t get locked out of making any more UPI transactions. But if you do, Airtel Payments Bank has a digital wallet and a savings account that you can use to make seamless payments. Although we hope you’ll be mindful of the limit.
